I was struck with an idea for a blog today on my morning walk with my dog. I have just completed treatment for cancer and in the process of being treated I lost all my hair. I realized then just how beautiful bald women are. Unfortunately, I noticed that many other female cancer patients, seemed ashamed of their new look and felt the need to hide it.
I understand that this look wasn’t by choice and traditionally hasn’t screamed femininity. However, I found it sad that someone should feel a lack of confidence due to this change. Or should feel like they can’t be themselves and instead fit into a box of how they “should” act with this new look. It’s enough that we have to deal with our illness, treatment, and the possibility of death. But to be worrying how someone may be judging us, or worse not accepting ourselves and what we’re going through in this difficult time is not okay for me. We should feel beautiful, strong, and brave for all we are going through.
I began to see life differently through this experience. I realized that there are more important things in this world than traditions and stereotypes. I shouldn’t have to feel defensive or explain why I look the way I do to anyone. I often felt quite strong, beautiful, and free once I shaved my head. Then I would go out in public and get the mean stares, or rude comments and that is unacceptable. It can be hard to fight against that pressure, especially when you’re not feeling well. So, there needs to be a place for us to celebrate our beauty with pride!
I want this blog to be a celebration of bald heads everywhere! I originally thought this blog would be just for female cancer patients who are bald, since that is what I identify with the most. However, I realize that male cancer patients who are also bald because of cancer treatment need a place for support as well.
So here are the rules: Please submit a picture of you with your bald head. If you wish to write a little description of yourself, feel free. My only requirement is, YOU MUST BE SMILING!!!
I’ve started the blog off with my bald picture up top! Please pass this blog along to anyone you think would be interested.
Love,
Jessica
